Human remains found inside a Kansas storage unit have now been identified by family as those of Jessica Monteiro Rey. The body was discovered by Lenexa police, who were responding to reports that a family was living in the unit.

The victim’s husband, Justin Rey, and the couple’s toddler and 5-day-old baby were found living in cramped conditions in a U-Haul storage facility. While investigating the situation, officers uncovered human remains in several pieces inside a cooler.

According to WDAF, witnesses say Justin Rey met them at a restaurant on the same day police arrested him.

While there, he told them he’d lost his wife in childbirth and was trying to take his daughters home to Arizona. The witness (who wanted to stay anonymous) agreed to take Rey to Union Station to catch a passenger train, but they first stopped at Rey’s storage unit to pick up what he needed for the trip.

That’s where the witness noticed Rey pulling a cooler that was leaking a trail of brown liquid. As they were leaving U-haul, Lenexa police showed up and took Rey into custody for child endangerment. Police said there was no food or diapers for the little ones.

The victim’s family said police in California told Jessica’s parents in person and on the phone that the person found was their daughter. Jessica’s family isn’t sure if she died in childbirth, which is what her husband told the witness. They believe she gave birth at a motel in Missouri.

According to the Daily Mail, staff from the Woodspring Suites motel said a man who was staying there called the front desk in a woman’s voice, pretending to be her, to check the family out of their stay.

That day, Rey was filmed on surveillance footage with a cooler and a stroller, and wife Jessica was not with him when he departed. He is believed to have left the motel and gone to the U-Haul unit in Lenexa.

An autopsy to reveal the cause of death is pending. Justin Rey will be in court next month.

Comments from Jessica’s family can be heard in the video below.
