Rep. Dan Johnson (R), a Kentucky state representative, is believed to have committed suicide after he was accused of molesting a teenage girl. Local news outlets in Louisville are reporting that Johnson shot and killed himself on a bridge in Mt. Washington, Ky.

According to WAVE 3 News:

Kentucky State Representative “Pope” Dan Johnson has committed suicide, days after a report surfaced alleging he assaulted a teenage girl in 2013.

Around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Johnson posted what appeared to be a suicide note to his Facebook page. In that note, Johnson denied allegations laid out in the story by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting.

The Bullitt County Coroner, David Billings, said officials saw the post on Johnson’s Facebook and pinged his phone to check on him.

When they arrived to his location, he was dead.

His cause of death was a single gunshot wound, according to Billings. There will be an autopsy Thursday.

The coroner says the death is a “probable suicide.

WDRB reports that the gun was recovered by police.

In an expose published on Monday, The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting alleged that Johnson forced himself on the 17-year-old friend of his daughter in 2012, after a New Year’s Eve Party.

Johnson denied the allegations on and said the accuser was a member of his church. He felt the claims may have been politically motivated.

“This is an assault on all real people, there’s no perfect people and you get into office and all of sudden political hacks come against you and start accusing you after you’re in office,” he said, according to the Courier-Journal.

WDRB reports that Johnson left the following message on Facebook, as an apparent suicide note, just before 5 p.m. Wednesday:

The accusations from NPR are false GOD and only GOD knows the truth, nothing is the way they make it out to be. AMERICA will not survive this type of judge and jury fake news.

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin posted a message of condolence on Twitter after the news broke.
