As an increasing number of reports surface, in which actor Kevin Spacey is accused of sexual misconduct, his publicist announced Thursday that the actor is seeking treatment.
“Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment. No other information is available at this time,” read the statement.
The first allegations came out earlier this week involving actor Anthony Rapp, who accused Spacey of making sexual advances towards him when he was just 14 years old. Spacey posted an apology on Twitter, saying that he did not recall the incident but that he was “sorry for the feelings [Rapp] describes having carried with him all these years.”
He also addressed stories about his personal life, confirming that he now “lives as a gay man.” However, Spacey’s statement was slammed by LGBTQ organizations, who said that his coming out was an attempt to “deflect” from the allegations.
Since Rapp revealed his experience with Spacey, more men have come forward to accuse the Oscar-winner of behaving inappropriately toward them.
Many of the accusations regarding Spacey go back to when he was artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London, a position he held for 11 years, until 2015.
Former Old Vic employees have stated that the theater had known about Spacey’s improper behavior at the time, but his conduct was ignored. “We were all involved in keeping it quiet,” one former employee told The Guardian newspaper. “I witnessed him groping men many times in all sorts of different situations.”
The institution released a statement saying it was “deeply dismayed” by the allegations. The theater has since set up an email address for anyone who has worked there to make a confidential complaint about inappropriate behavior by Spacey or anyone else.
On Wednesday, another man came forward, saying that when he was 17 years old, Spacey laid on him while he was sleeping. The episode had reportedly occurred in the 1980s in New York.
The man said that when he was 17, Spacey invited him to spend the weekend in New York. While there, he said Spacey asked him to share his bed, but that he had declined and slept on the sofa. He then described waking up in the morning to find Spacey’s arms around him.
“I was uncomfortable, at best, traumatized at worst,” he said.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Roberto Cavazos, a Mexican actor, revealed that Spacey was known for making unwanted advances toward young men. “It seems that it only took a male under 30 to make Mr. Spacey feel free to touch us,” he said.
He also noted that Spacey was often seen in the Old Vic’s bar, “squeezing whoever caught his attention.”
Of his own dealings with the depraved actor, Cavazos said, “I myself had a couple of unpleasant encounters with Spacey that were on the edge of being called harassment.”
