As he considers a battle on the GOP ticket for the Michigan Senate seat up for grabs in next year’s midterm elections, musician Kid Rock is receiving a ringing endorsement from former New York Governor George Pataki on Tuesday.
The retired politician said in a Tuesday tweet: “Kid Rock is exactly the kind of candidate the GOP needs right now.”
Kid Rock, formally known as Robert Ritchie, has all but completely jumped in the ring for the 2018 Senate race, hinting at a possible campaign last month while promoting his philanthropy:
“As part of the excitement surrounding this possible campaign, I decided to take a hard look to see if there was real support for me as a candidate and my message or if it was just because it was a fresh new news story,” Rock said. “The one thing I’ve seen over and over is that although people are unhappy with the government, too few are even registered to vote or do anything about it.”
He has a legitimate chance at making some noise, too, as early polling numbers put him atop the pack of GOP candidates challenging Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow. The Senate Leadership Fund, a GOP super PAC, has said its open to backing the former pop star.
“We’d actually be very interested in his candidacy. I certainly wouldn’t count him out,” said Steven Law Friday on C-SPAN.
“The superficial sense of Kid Rock is that he’s an entertainer, that he’s kind of this wild redneck. But the truth of the matter is that he’s done a lot in his home state philanthropically, he’s a pretty smart guy, he thinks about policy and he’s a shrewd businessman,” Law added.
He may need to lose his stage name, however, as Michigan law states: A candidate cannot use a “nickname that is not a recognized diminutive of the candidate’s given name or middle name.”
