Cuban-American public relations guru Denise Galvez had a choice to make. She had voted for Marco Rubio in the Florida primary, because she had known him for a long time, but when he lost to Trump and left the race, she decided, “I’m not gonna sit it out.”
“At a recent event, I was talking with other women about politics. We were almost ashamed to admit we were all leaning toward Trump. We were talking about establishment politicians taking us for granted and not putting this country first.” Galvez and her girlfriends took action, and formed Latinas For Trump, a grassroots organization whose membership has grown to over 250 and facebook page now has over 700 likes. Sunday evening, the group held their first rally at American Social in the Brickell area of Miami, Florida, where about three dozen Trump supporters – most of them women – mingled over cocktails and appetizers. Each attendee received a red “Latinas For Trump” t-shirt.
It was a “coming-out” party of sorts – they are Hispanics, they are women – many of them professionals and business owners – and they are not ashamed to admit they support Donald Trump for president. In spite of a recent Fox News Latino poll that said Clinton leads Trump 62 to 23 percent with Latino voters, Latinas For Trump co-founder Ileana Garcia says polls don’t take into account all the Latinos who are secretly supporting Trump.
They were inspired by Arizona business owner Betty Rivas, who said she started receiving harassing phone calls after she appeared on stage with Trump holding a campaign sign for him. “We have a right to go out there, not be scared, and say who we support,” Garcia said.
Garcia is an independent voter who switched to Republican just so she can vote for Trump. “I liked how he just went at the other candidates,” she said.
Another member of the group, Lisa Concepcion, said, “I was in the closet since August of last year. I think the momentum he was gaining made it feel it was time for me to come out.”
“We all don’t think he is racist,” Galvez said. “We actually think he is a respectable businessman. We actually agree with the things he proposes.” They hope to convince other professional women to take a public stand for the candidate.
