Lawmaker Makes Racist Claim Over Order of Testimony at Sessions’ Hearing

During the second day of the confirmation hearing for Jeff Sessions, Representative Cedric Richmond (D-La.) testified against the Alabama Republican who was nominated to be Attorney General for President-elect Trump.

He prefaced his testimony by expressing his displeasure with the order in which the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee scheduled the speaking slots.

Richmond expressed his disapproval with how Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and himself, all three who oppose Sessions’ becoming the Attorney General, were some of the last to provide their testimony in the hearing.

In an unprecedented move, the three black legislators joined forces against their colleague saying he was unfit for the position. Richmond took the opportunity to use his speaking slot as a platform to blast the entire GOP-led committee and criticize them for when it scheduled their testimonies.

Richmond, calling the order of speakers a “petty strategy,” said, “To have a senator, a house member and a living civil rights legend [John Lewis] testify at the end of all of this, is equivalent of being made to go to the back of the bus.”

“My record on equality speaks for itself, and I don’t mind being last, but to have a living legend like John Lewis handled in such a fashion is beyond the pale and the message sent by this process is duly noted by me and the 49 members of the Congressional Black Caucus and the 78 million Americans we represent and the over 17 [million] African Americans.”

After his testimony, Richmond took to Twitter to continue his campaign against his speaking slot saying, “Having us testify at the end of this session, is equivalent to sitting at the back of the bus.”
