Lawyer for Ivanka and Jared working on lawsuit against DOJ

An attorney who has been working on behalf of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump is now reportedly working on behalf of the city of Chicago on a pro-bono basis in its recent lawsuit against the Department of Justice in the fight over federal funding for sanctuary cities.

Jamie Gorelick, a high-profile Democrat “super lawyer” who also supported Hillary Clinton, was first hired by Kushner and Ivanka to help them get through the security clearance and ethics compliance process necessary for their roles in the White House.

Gorelick is a partner at the WilmerHale law firm, a donor to Hillary Clinton’s many campaigns, and served as general counsel at the Defense Department and as the deputy attorney general during Bill Clinton’s administration, The Daily Caller reported.

A conflict of interest arose that caused Gorelick to announce last month that she would no longer represent Kushner in matters related to the Russia investigation, as Special Counsel Robert Mueller is also a partner at the WilmerHale law firm.

Gorelick reportedly continues to represent Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, in other matters.

Referencing her work for members of the Trump family, Gorelick said this would not be a conflict in her handling the Chicago case against the DOJ. “Our representations of individuals in the government do not prevent us from representing other clients challenging government policies,” Gorelick stated.

On all matters relating to the Russia investigation, Kushner is now represented by another Democratic super lawyer – Abbe Lowell.

In regards to the City of Chicago’s lawsuit against the Department of Justice, attorneys handling the case (including Gorelick) released the following statement:

“(The executive branch) may not unilaterally concoct and import into the Byrne JAG program sweeping new policy conditions that were never approved (and indeed were considered and rejected) by Congress and that would federalize local jails and police stations, mandate warrantless detentions in order to investigate for federal civil infractions, sow fear in local immigrant communities, and ultimately make the people of Chicago less safe.”
