Something more than coffee is brewing over Starbucks’ latest holiday cup, as the controversy is getting heated.

A commercial introducing the new holiday cup promotion from Starbucks features drawings that many conservatives are interpreting as promoting a “gay agenda.”

The animated video begins with the caption, “The holidays mean something different to everyone.”

Several bi-racial scenes are shown, and then as the commercial ends, it shows two women leaning close to each other over a steaming cup as they reach out to hold hands and fireworks go off in the background. On the cup, two hands are then shown clasped together, with a heart in between.

Although it is impossible to tell the gender of the hands on the cup, many are connecting it to the scene with the two women to conclude it represents a lesbian couple, and Starbucks reportedly has not denied it.

Another scene in the commercial shows a mixed-race couple, featuring an older white women, and a man wearing a taqiyah, which is a type of cap often worn by Muslims.

CNBC reported that Allen Adamson, founder and CEO of BrandSimple Consulting, said of Starbucks’ animated commercial, “They are leaning in to the issue of this country needs to come together across all lines and by making it an animation it’s a little softer and potentially less polarizing.”

Starbucks released a statement in an email: “Each year during the holidays, we aim to bring our customers an experience that inspires the spirit of the season and we will continue to embrace and welcome customers from all backgrounds and religions in our stores around the world.”

CNBC noted that, in 2013 Starbucks added coverage for gender reassignment surgery to its healthcare benefits, and in January 2017 the company announced that it would give jobs to 10,000 refugees by 2022.
