Comments Vice President Mike Pence made regarding his love and respect for his wife are stirring up a lot of controversy on the internet.
People.com reported on the news that Pence has said he will not dine with another woman if his wife is not present and won’t attend events where alcohol is served without his wife.
To some, this is interpreted as fewer “job opportunities” for women.
“If Pence won’t eat dinner alone with any woman but his wife, that means he won’t hire women in key spots,” said Clara Jeffery, editor-in-chief of Mother Jones magazine.
“There are a zillion threads out there about the Pences’ extra-suffocating habits, but the key one is this,” she continued. “If Pence won’t eat with a woman alone, how could a woman be chief of staff, or lawyer, campaign manager, or… Would Pence dine with Ivanka or Kellyanne? Or, are they, too, relegated to second class citizens? For that matter, how would he ever even interview a woman … with a chaperone?”

This isn’t about mocking Pence for his lifestyle, it’s about women being denied access to professional opportunities powerful men control.

Others are implying his views will affect opportunities for men, as well.
“The revolting thing about Pence’s no-meals-with-women rule isn’t prudishness. It’s that he’s limiting key professional opportunities to men,” wrote Ian Millhiser, an editor at ThinkProgress.

Still others are defending the vice president’s support of what they consider family values.
“Seriously what’s the appropriate reason for a married person to go out for a meal alone with a member of the other sex (outside of family)?” said Conservative blogger Matt Walsh. “If you laugh at Pence for respecting his marriage, it’s probably because you’ve never been in a healthy one.”

I also refuse to dine alone with any woman who is not Mike Pence’s wife.

Brian Howey, the publisher of Howey Politics Indiana, an Indiana-based political newspaper, told The Washington Post that Karen Pence plays a quiet, but important role in Pence’s life.
“As governor, Mike Pence had a very tight inner circle, and Karen Pence was very much a part of that,” Howey said. “I would characterize her as the silent, omnipresent partner. You knew she was there. You knew there was some considerable influence she wielded, but, boy, she was not public about it.”
