Liberal comedian’s jokes about Ivanka, Melania get cold reception at award show

At an awards show known as the “Oscars of Fashion” in New York Monday, host Seth Meyers had mixed success playing to his liberal following with jokes about Melania and Ivanka Trump.

Hosting the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards for the first time since 2012, Meyers wasted little time before working in a Trump quip: “Abercrombie and Fitch has announced it’s putting itself up for sale. Meanwhile, thanks to Donald Trump, the United States has become a Banana Republic.”

Undeterred by the silence following his first joke, Meyers turned to the rest of the first family. “It’s harder than ever to separate fashion from politics. First Lady Melania Trump made headlines recently after she decided not to wear a head cover while visiting Saudi Arabia.”

He got his best laughs of the night, which were tepid at best, after adding, “Which was especially shocking, since her husband wears a head covering literally everywhere.”

His last joke bombed as he attempted to make fun of Ivanka Trump’s failed fashion line in Nordstrom.
