In yet another tired, unfunny attack on President Trump, late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday expressed his outrage over President Trump’s new immigration proposal.
Unveiled earlier that day, Colbert took great offense at the president’s proposal to effectively halve the number of green cards issued each year from 1 million to roughly 500,000 over the course of a decade, joking that only one of the first lady’s parents could visit the United States under the plan.
“Melania, honey, uh, I got some tough news,” Colbert said, putting on his best Trump-voice and mocking a moment during the couple’s visit to France in which Trump complimented the French first lady’s appearance. “Only 50 percent of your parents can come to Thanksgiving. I say your mom. She’s in great physical shape … really looking good.”
Trump unveiled the new immigration plan, known as the RAISE Act, along with co-sponsors Sens. David Perdue (R-Ga.) and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) on Thursday. The new measure is designed to put the needs of millions of Americans ahead of those of non-citizens, which is something liberals like Colbert think is detestable.
In addition to reducing the number of legal immigrants allowed into the United States, the plan would favor immigrants who have marketable skills and are, therefore, the most likely to succeed and expand the economy, rather than becoming a drain on taxpayers by using our welfare system.
Known as a “merit-based system,” applicants would earn points based on education, English-language ability, high-paying job offers, age, record of extraordinary achievement, and entrepreneurial initiative.
Colbert obviously hates it, and so does his audience, which booed the moment he mentioned it. He played a short clip of the president talking about this “merit-based system” and pointed out that it will protect American workers and taxpayers. The clip ended with Trump saying, “And that’s why we’re here today.”
Colbert then stated, “Mr. President, wherever you are today, it’s not based on merit.” His audience went crazy at that joke, cheering and clapping as though they’d never heard something so funny.
Other who have been up in arms about the immigration proposal include liberal stalwart late night hosts Trevor Noah and Seth Meyers.
Colbert was also outraged last week when Trump proposed his banning of transgenders from the military. Colbert ripped into the tweeted announcement President Trump made last week stating that he intends to ban transgender people from serving in the military, stating: “I began my day today as I often begin my days by checking Donald Trump’s Twitter feed to see how far the crazy has spread. Today, I really think he’s off his meds because today he went from crazy to cruel.”
Colbert ended his report on Trump’s ban with a simple yet crude statement: “F*** you.”
The liberal host has truly been ruthless in all things Trump this summer. He attacked Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) and Attorney General Jeff Sessions earlier in July, calling the former an “anti-LGBT hate group.”
