Liberal Lawyer: Russian probe against Trump is a danger to democracy

The Democrat-led investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia is being used as a political weapon against President Donald J Trump, said acclaimed attorney Alan Dershowitz, a self-professed liberal.

“The idea of trying to create crimes just because we disagree with [Trump] politically, and target him, really endangers democracy. [It] reminds me of what the head of the KGB said to Stalin: ‘Show me the man, and I will find you the crime,'” Dershowitz told John Catsimatidis on New York’s AM 970 in an interview that aired on Sunday.

“[This is] where things happen in darkness and secrecy. The American public doesn’t learn about it,” he observed, explaining how secrecy is meant to mislead average Americans. “This is exactly the wrong way to approach the problem of Russia’s attempt to influence American election. We do not know what is going on. We get leaks, but the leaks are selective leaks.”

The Harvard law scholar pointed to former FBI Director James Comey as having encouraged other members of government to leak classified information after he practically bragged about it during his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee back in June, saying he asked a “good friend of mine who is a professor at Columbia Law School” to leak the contents of his own memo to a reporter. That information made it to the New York Times shortly after Comey was dismissed from the FBI in May.

“One of the worst offenders of leaks is the former head of the FBI, Comey,” Dershowitz says. “[He] created a very, very bad precedent for people in government, making it sound like it is okay to leak material. It is not okay to leak material!”

The conversations detailed in the memos, in which Trump appears to ask Comey to drop his investigation of Michael Flynn, are what led to the formation of Mueller’s special counsel office. Comey admitted in his testimony that this was by design.

Mueller has been investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election and alleged collusion between Trump campaign staff and Moscow.

Commenting on Dershowitz, DML NEWS CEO, Dennis Michael Lynch, said the following: “I’ve interviewed Alan and he will tell you upfront he is a hard-line Democrat.  He doesn’t support the policies of Trump.  But as much as he is a Democrat, he is first and foremost an American, and he’s a lawyer who does not allow his politics to get in the way of the truth.  If Alan says something about the law, I tend to believe it over all other comments made by lawyers appearing on TV.”
