Regardless of the fact that Trump won the presidency, South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham has jumped on the “Trump must release his tax returns” bandwagon, and goes a step further to declare, “Any candidate in 2020 should release their tax returns.”

An article in The Hill noted that as one of the president’s harshest GOP critics, Graham is working in tandem with a group of hostile Democrats who have introduced legislation to force anyone running for a major political office in the future to turn over their tax documents.

To that end, they recently called a press conference hoping to persuade Republicans to allow review of Trump’s tax returns by Congress.

Leading the effort are Sens. Debbi Stabenow (Mich.), Tom Carper (Del.), Ron Wyden (Ore.), and Rep. Bill Pascrell (N.J.). On the House floor this week, Pascrell attempted to force members to vote on a resolution that would request the president’s tax returns, but it failed in a party-line vote.

Unlike previous politicians who ran for POTUS, Trump refused to release his tax returns during the 2016 race, claiming that an ongoing IRS audit was the reason. The agency later said that an audit wouldn’t stand in the way of releasing the documents.

Earlier this year, Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told an ABC television pundit that Trump will not release his tax returns and that citizens don’t care.
