London terror plot thwarted

Four London men arrested last week under suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack have been remanded into custody.

Facing charges under the Terrorism Act are Umar Ahmed Haque, 24, and Muhammad Abid, 26, both from Newham, and Abuthaher Mamun, 18, from Barking.

The fourth suspect, Nadeem Patel, 25, also from Newham, has been charged with firearms offences.

All of the suspects appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, and are scheduled for hearings on June 9.

An investigation by MI5 and the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit led to the arrests of the suspects.

Haque allegedly planned to carry out a mass-murder plot using a vehicle loaded with explosives.

Abid is accused of failing to disclose information, and Mamun faces charges of assisting another to commit acts of terrorism.
