Lynn Anne Poirier, the former Florida school teacher who last month lost nearly one-third of a $1 million lottery jackpot to her former boyfriend, who had sued her for failing to share, has filed for bankruptcy.
In early February, a six-member jury ordered Lynn to pay her boyfriend, Mr. Browning, $291,000 after concluding the two had a valid but unwritten contract to split any major lottery jackpot. But Browning so far has collected $0.
Last week Mr. Browning’s lawyer requested Circuit Judge Melanie Chase to tack on more than $150,000, the amount of interest due from when Poirier won the jackpot in 2007, plus another $200,000 for legal fees.
In her bankruptcy paperwork, Poirier did not spell out how she’d spent her lottery winnings, but during the trial she testified that after winning, she bought a building in Arkansas and intended to open a restaurant. She did not list Mr. Browning in the filing, meaning, she doesn’t acknowledge she owes any money to him.
Poirier bought the winning lottery ticket in 2007. She took a one-time payout of $750,000. Browning testified that at the time of the drawing, they were a couple living together. He claims he gave her the $20 to buy the winning ticket.
Poirier claims Browning’s story is false. She said they were not a couple at the time, and that they did not live together. She claims was engaged to someone else at the time of the drawing. She also testified that she and Browning met each other by chance at the convenience store on the day she bought the ticket for herself. She claims she used her own money. Either way, it appears nobody will come away a winner.
