Major city makes bid for “Obama Boulevard”

A Los Angeles city councilman has proposed re-naming one city street in honor of former president Barack Obama.

Herb Wesson, LA city council president, wants to designate a 3.4 mile stretch of Rodeo Road “Obama Boulevard”.  He reasons that there are three other streets in that area named for former presidents George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson… so Obama should be next.

Wesson also gave another reason for his suggestion, noting that this was an area where Obama made one of his first presidential campaign stops in 2008 while he was still a U.S. senator.

Wesson recalled the “historic” event, saying, “The crowd was crazy, and his security for the most part wound up being this big guy that used to work for me” nicknamed ‘Big John,’ who had to use his body and arms to hold people away from Obama.  It was overwhelming. You didn’t have crowds like this.”

He said naming the street after Obama is something that “will live on longer, after me and him.”

The Los Angeles Daily News reported that the name change would require approval by the L.A. City Council and by the mayor.  Wesson’s staff is reportedly writing a letter to Obama to advise him they are planning to name a street in his honor.
