Malia Obama Joins Pipeline Protesters

Just days after moving out of the White House, former President Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia, joined ranks with the anti-Trump protesters.

Malia, 18, reportedly flew from Palm Springs on Sunday, where her family was vacationing, to Park City, Utah.

Monday, she joined about 100 other people at a rally in the snow, in a protest against Trump’s plans to move forward with the Dakota Access pipeline project.

The Daily Mail reported that the group held up signs reading, “Exist. Resist. Rise,” and “Impeach corporate control.”

They were protesting at the Sundance Film Festival, because the festival had allowed the Chase Bank to be a sponsor of the event – and Chase is invested in the pipeline.    The protesters were also there to show their support for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

After the protest, Malia attended a private event with Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault.

Obama put the pipeline project on hold in December, but President Trump has signed an executive order now allowing it to move forward.

Actress Shailene Woodley, a longtime protester of the pipeline, revealed in an interview with Democracy Now that Malia had attended the protest.

“It was amazing to see Malia. I saw her last night when we did the event with Chairman Dave Archambault. And it was incredible to see her there,” said Woodley, 25, when asked about the former first daughter’s very public support of the cause.

She went on to say: “Also, to witness a human being and a woman coming into her own outside of her family and outside of the attachments that this country has on her, but someone who’s willing to participate in democracy because she chooses to, because she recognizes, regardless of her last name, that if she doesn’t participate in democracy, there will be no world for her future children.”

According to the Daily Mail, Malia traveled through Peru and Bolivia last fall as part of a “Where There Be Dragons” program, that promotes “cross-culture education, leadership, self-exploration and global citizenship.”

She is to be starting an internship with producer Harvey Weinstein, beginning next month.
