UPDATE 07/18/16 – 9:10 p.m. EDT | The attacker was a 17-year-old Afghan man who shouted “Allahu Akbar” before launching into his terrifying attack on innocent passengers.

DEVELOPING STORY:  Reports of 15 to 20 people seriously injured – some fighting for their lives – after a man boarded a train in Germany and went on a bloody rampage with an axe Monday evening.

According to witnesses, the man used both an axe and a knife in his brutal attack on passengers.  Reports are varying between 15 to 20 people who were hacked by the man, who then fled as police swamped upon the scene.   He was shot and killed by police.

Helicopters swirled overhead and the area was flooded with emergency vehicles rushing to treat the wounded.

BBC News has reported that a journalist with the national broadcaster ZDF tweeted that the attacker was a 17-year-old Afghan man.  This information was confirmed by Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann.

The incident is understood to have taken place at the station in Heidingsfeld, a part of the city of Wurzburg in southern Germany.

The train line between Wurzburg-Heidingsfeld and Ochsenfurt is closed as investigators scour the area for clues.
