A man has died after attempting to go over Niagara Falls in an inflatable ball. According to police, the body of 53-year-old Kirk R. Jones was found downriver from the falls by the U.S. Coast Guard on June 2.

Back when he was 40, in October 2003, Jones became the first person to survive plunging over the falls without any kind of protection, such as a barrel or a boat.

New York State Park Police Detective Sgt. Brian Nisbet said that investigators believe Jones was attempting to go over the falls inside of a 10-foot ball on April 19, which was spotted spinning atop the falls that day. When the Maid of the Mist tour boat recovered the ball after it went over the precipitous drop, it was empty.

On Oct. 20, 2003, Jones was wearing only his clothes when he took the historical plunge. His body was discovered about 12 miles downriver from the falls, at the mouth of Lake Ontario, said Nisbet.
