In Sanaa, Yemen, a man convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl was executed on Monday in front of hundreds of people at Sanaa’s Tahrir Square.
Just before Muhammad al-Maghrabi, 41, was shot by policemen, he laid on a blanket on the ground, with his hands handcuffed behind his back, while a judge read aloud the death sentence.
Due to the young age of the victim, Rana al-Matari, the execution drew a huge crowd of onlookers.
There was a heavy security presence because many feared a revenge attack on Maghrabi by armed tribesmen related to his victim. The police vehicle transporting Maghrabi to the square was escorted by five police patrol vehicles.
Yahya al-Matari, the father of the girl, said after the execution that he felt as if he had been reborn.
“This is the first day in my life,” he said. “I am relieved now.”
