An unnamed 44-year-old man was shot six times in Manhattan during the early hours of Sunday morning following a book launch party near West 22nd Street. Between the corners of sixth and seventh avenue, three suspects stalked the victim when one of the men opened fire. He shot the man six times below the waist.
Undercover cops responded to the 1am shooting and attempted to arrest the three suspects. However, they hopped into a black Mercedes and drove off, leading to an epic car chase. The three were finally caught when the Mercedes abruptly stopped and the patrol car crashed into it.
Cops then arrested the three lawbreakers: Ramel Harkless, 38, Joseph Saunders, 43, and Barry Wiles, 46, all from Brooklyn. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the Mercedes. As for the victim, he was brought to to Bellevue Hospital Center for surgery following being shot in the torso, leg and groin, and is in critical condition.
NYPD Captain Steven Spataro released the following statement regarding the incident:
“We’re exploring a possible connection between the victim and the perpetrators. I want to commend all of the officers involved in this response and apprehension.They reacted quickly, during an evolving situation that was inherently dangerous. They put themselves in harm’s way and successfully brought the incident to a swift conclusion.”
Charges against the criminals will include first degree assault, criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment.
