Seven fundraising events scheduled to be held at President Donald J Trump’s privately held resort in south Florida have been cancelled.
Charity events that originally booked Mar-a-Largo have begun removing themselves from the venue, seemingly in the wake of the president’s remarks about the violence and hate that erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend.
On Friday, three fundraisers had cancelled their engagements at the president’s luxury resort. The American Friends of Magen David, a fundraiser for Israel’s version of the Red Cross, cancelled their date on Thursday. Two others, the American Cancer Society, and The Cleveland Clinic, also cancelled their shceduled events.
Saturday, The Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach announced on Facebook that it had pulled its annual dinner dance from Trump’s high-end property. “Given the current environment surrounding Mar-a-Lago, we have made the decision to move our annual dinner dance,” the group wrote.
President Donald J. Trump has faced tough criticism over his statements about Virginia. The president has maintained the opinions that multiple groups are to blame for the events in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday, August 12.
Many in the media, and from the Left, wanted the president to blame only the KKK members who attended, and the white supremacists that organized the event. But the president would not deny the fact that far-left groups attended with bats and clubs ready to fight.
The backlash has led to several resignations from the president’s advisory boards, including every member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, and multiple executive members of President Donald J Trump’s manufacturing council.
According to the Washington Post, the Salvation Army, the Autism Project of Palm Beach County and Susan G Komen have also cancelled events at Mar-a-Lago, bringing the total to 7 events officially cancelled so far.
According to The Shiny Sheet, which is associated with Palm Beach Daily News, 17 events in total have been cancelled. They include:
- American Cancer Society ball
- American Friends of Magen David Adom
- American Humane Association Hero Dogs luncheon
- Autism Project of Palm Beach County
- Bascom Palmer Eye Institute gala

The Shiny Sheet lists one additional event as having canceled, however, the cancellation of the “LIFE Lady in Red Gala” at Trump’s Palm Beach resort is still pending board approval.
Mar-a-Lago is a resort and National Historic Landmark in Palm Beach, Florida, built from 1924 to 1927 by cereal-company heiress and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post. The 126-room, 62,500-square-foot house contains the Mar-a-Lago Club, a members-only club with guest rooms, a spa, and other hotel-style amenities. It is located on the barrier island section of Palm Beach, with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway to the west, and its western lawns are exposed to rising sea levels.
At the time of her death in 1973, Post bequeathed the property to the National Park Service, hoping it could be used for state visits or as a Winter White House. However, due to the costs of maintaining the property exceeding the funds provided by Post, and the difficulty in securing the facility in the flight path of Palm Beach Airport, the property was returned to the Post Foundation by an Act of Congress in 1981.
In 1985, Mar-a-Lago was purchased by businessman Donald Trump and his then-wife Ivana Trump was put in charge of running the property. The Trump family maintains private quarters in a separate, closed-off area of the house and grounds, and since becoming President, Trump has frequently stayed there, referring to it as his “Southern White House“. It is the 20th largest mansion in the United States.
