The March For Our Lives demonstration involving students in favor of gun control measures scheduled to take place Saturday in Washington, D.C., and across the country is being organized and planned by a coalition of liberal activist groups and is now registered as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit advocacy organization.
Records indicate that the March for Our Lives Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) “social welfare” nonprofit organization that is not required to disclose its donors, was registered on March 8 with the D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs.
Although the organization’s website states that it is “for kids and by kids” and the “March For Our Lives organizers are the kids themselves,” it also notes that the kids “have brought in support to help ensure it is a success.”
Such support is being provided by left-wing activist organizations including gun-control groups Everytown for Gun Safety, the Brady Campaign, and Giffords. Permitting for the event and promotional efforts are being provided by organizers from the Women’s March, Planned Parenthood, and Move On.org.
Tax-deductible donations to March For Our Lives are being directed to Everytown, which has set up a March For Our Lives Initiative under their own 501(c)(3) operation, and a donor list will be publicly disclosed. Conversely, donors to the March For Our Lives Action Fund, as a 501(c)(4) organization, will be afforded anonymity, The Washington Free Beacon reported.
“March for Our Lives Action Fund is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code,” according to the organization’s website. “Unlike section 501(c)(3) charitable organizations which have restrictions on their lobbying activities, section 501(c)(4) organizations are permitted to conduct unlimited lobbying for federal tax purposes. This form of entity gives the students maximum flexibility to conduct high-impact legislative advocacy during the Day of Action and beyond.”
Donations being made to the group will purportedly be used to fund expenses for the march and future gun control lobbying efforts.
“Donations to the March For Our Lives Action Fund will cover all expenses associated with the march taking place in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, March 24th,” the site states. “The funds will also be used to fight for comprehensive gun safety legislation at the local, state, and federal level, and will also include voter education, ballot initiatives, and lobbying state legislatures and Congress to protect America’s kids.”
Despite donors being allowed anonymity, some have publicly announced their support of the group, including Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, and Jeffrey Katzenberg, who have each donated $500,000. The fashion company Gucci also donated $500,000.
