Alex Henize proposed to his girlfriend on Christmas Eve, but the usually romantic event quickly turned violent. When Henize’s girlfriend rejected the proposal, the distraught Columbus, Ohio, man took her and their two-year-old daughter hostage.
The girlfriend managed to call her relatives early Tuesday morning, telling them Henize was holding her and her daughter captive in their home. The relatives, in turn, called the police.
When arriving at the scene, officers said they saw the girlfriend holding the daughter through a second story window. She relayed to law enforcement that the two could not leave the apartment since Henize had a gun and threatened to shoot them.
Officers managed to bust into the home and defuse the situation. Upon Henize’s arrest, police found 11 lb. of fentanyl inside his home, enough to kill thousands in the central Ohio area. Authorities also located three guns and $20,000 cash.
Henize has been charged with drug possession. On Wednesday, prosecutors argued that he also endangered his daughter by keeping the drugs in the same home as her.
“He admitted he was cutting up the fentanyl after receiving it,” assistant Franklin County prosecutor Dan Staley said in court. “He was very careful in the way he did it because the family wouldn’t be there. He admitted to cleaning up the kitchen with bleach, the same kitchen the two-year-old has access to.”
The judge set a $1.25 million bond in the case.
