Was it stupidity or the desire to impress a woman that caused a 45-year-old man to take off with a $150,000 Maserati during a test-drive?

After giving his ID to the Ferrari-Maserati dealership in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, Michael Lewis McGilvary took the store’s salesman for a short spin before talking him into stopping at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, claiming that he wanted to show the car to his girlfriend, according to a story in the Daily Caller.

When they arrived at the club, McGilvary got the salesman to take a walk out to the dock to see his dad’s boat while he went to fetch his alleged girlfriend. After waiting for about half-an-hour, the salesman suspected that he had been tricked.

When subsequently speaking to a valet worker who witnessed McGilvary drive away, the salesman knew it was time to call the police. McGilvary was later found at a nearby Starbucks and arrested. Now in prison, he is facing grand larceny of $100,000 or more, according to the article.
