Diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba are supposedly better, but a man waving an American flag at a May Day event in Havana received anything but fair treatment.
Daniel Llorente ran out ahead of the start of a parade with the flag and yelling slogans against the communist Cuban government. That is when a group of men caught up to Llorente, threw him to the ground, took the flag and began beating him with their feet and fists and eventually dragged him away.
The event is held globally on May 1 to celebrate Marxism and is also known as International Workers’ Day.
It is considered a holiday and a mandatory parade in Cuba with all of their political leaders attending, including Raul Castro.
This was not the first time that Llorente, who was described as a freelance cab driver, had waved the American flag in protest in his homeland. In 2016, he did the same during the first American cruise ship’s arrival in Havana after then-President Obama dropped the embargo.
Llorente is not involved in any dissident group or organization, but merely chooses to protest what he feels is an oppressive government.
