On Monday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and a few other lawmakers from New York filed a letter stating President-elect Donald Trump should pay for his own security costs if his family maintain two residences; Trump Tower and the White House. The other lawmakers involved in the letter are New York Democratic Reps. Nydia Velazquez, Grace Meng, Jerry Nadler, Yvette Clarke, Jose Serrano and Hakeem Jeffries
Mayor de Blasio has even charged President Obama and his adminitration a $35 million reimbursement for the state of New York in accordance with Trump’s security costs in traveling between D.C. and Manhattan.
The security costs of protecting Trump and his family were estimated by CNN to cost New York City more than $1 million per day, but de Blasio has provided an estimate of almost $500,000 per day.
Soon-to-be First Lady Melania, and 10-year-old son, Barron, plan to keep living at Trump Tower in Manhattan until at least next spring once Barron finishes school. Thus, Trump plans to travel to New York frequently post-inauguration. The lawmakers do not want to use excess or other vital funds to pay for the Trump family’s travels.
The letter reads:
“As you are aware, the President-Elect and his family could receive excellent security by choosing to reside at the White House. This solution would keep the President-Elect and his family safe, while minimizing federal and local taxpayer expense. To be clear: we understand the absolute importance of keeping the incoming First Family safe. However, municipal or state resources should not be subsidizing the President Elect’s decision to maintain multiple permanent residences.”
