Jeffrey Slavin, the mayor of the Montgomery County town of Somerset belonged to the Woodmont Country Club until the membership voiced concern over President Obama potentially becoming a member. Mayor Slavin said on Monday that he could no longer belong to a community that is intolerant and rejects President Obama.
According to the Washington Post, members of the predominantly Jewish club said they wouldn’t allow Obama to join because of his stances on Israel, particularly for his decision to not veto the U.N. Council resolution that condemns Israeli settlements.
“He has created a situation in the world where Israel’s very existence is weakened and possibly threatened,” longtime member Faith Goldstein wrote in an email obtained by The Washington Post. “He is not welcome at Woodmont. His admittance would create a storm that could destroy our club.”
In an email to the general manager of the club, Mayor Slavin wrote, “I can no longer belong to a community: Where Intolerance is accepted, Where History is forgotten, Where Freedom of Speech is denied, and where the nation’s first black president is disrespected.”
Mayor Slavin ended his email to the club by saying, “Thanks for many great memories.”
While Obama hasn’t announced plans to become a member of Woodmont, it was speculated he would apply because it was one of his favorite clubs played throughout his presidency.
Woodmont charges members an $80,000 initiation fee, and almost $10,000 in annual fees.
