Media Matters lies about its connection to Soros

This week, CNN fired Pro-Trump commentator Jeffrey Lord after he sent a controversial tweet invoking Nazi salutations (“Sieg Heil”) to Media Matters president Angelo Carusone. Lord was critical of Carusone and his leftist organization for receiving funds from George Soros.

Carusone repeatedly claimed on Twitter that Media Matters had only received “one donation one time…in 2010” from the infamous billionaire, who has funded many liberal politicians and organizations before. However, this is actually a flat-out lie.

According to tax forms from Soros’ Foundation to Promote Open Society (OSF), there were five separate donations between 2010 and 2014 totaling $1,575,000. Soros gave the organization money every other year during that time period, and, considering the organization’s 990 tax forms aren’t yet disclosed for the 2016 year, it might be likely that more donations were funded.

Carusone’s tweet seems to be referring to the billionaire’s statement that he gave Media Matters $1 million back in 2010, but that only accounts for a portion of the money donated. A whole $575,000 remained unaccounted for. In 2010, Politico reported on the donation, saying “George Soros announced that he has given $1 million to Media Matters ‘to hold Fox News accountable for the false and misleading information they so often broadcast.’”

OSF’s 2010 tax return showcases two separate donations to Media Matters for America. There was one for $75,000 and another for $600,000. Both donations were “to provide general support,” likely meaning to combat conservative news media. In sum, that would leave $325,000 left to the 2010 gift.

Then in 2012, OSF donated twice more to Media Matters. Another “general support” donation was made for $400,000, and then an additional $200,000 was granted “to train and equip progressive spokespeople with the media skills and messaging they need to effectively communicate progressive values and ideals on economic and fiscal policy in the media.” Additionally in 2o14, a $300,000 donation from OSF went “to provide project support for the Spanish-language media monitoring project.”

Last week, Fox News host Sean Hannity took to Twitter to expose the liberal media watchdog organization Media Matters and Soros. In his tweet, Hannity links to a produced memo from Media Matters. It’s about fifty pages long, but it details the Democrats’ plans to strike back at the GOP and conservatives by the time 2020 rolls around.

One of these plans is to impeach President Trump. Hannity writes: “Exposed;   Plans to impeach  and silence all conservatives. Must read!”

Another exposed Soros connection surfaced last week regarding White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and a group he was connected to that was funded by the billionaire.

Breitbart News published a report which reveals that McMaster served at a UK-based think tank financed by a controversial, George Soros-funded group identified by the Obama White House as central in helping to sell the Iran nuclear deal to the public and news media.

From September 2006 to February 2017, McMaster is listed as a member of International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), where he served as consulting senior fellow. The IISS describes itself as a “world-leading authority on global security, political risk and military conflict.”

Breitbart points out that the IISS “has been supportive of the Obama administration-brokered 2015 nuclear accord with Iran, and the group has repeatedly hit back against charges that Tehran has violated the agreement.”

McMaster raised suspicions when he fired members of the National Security Council who have been opposed to the Iran agreement, while he is known to support it and has reportedly urged the White House to recertify Iran’s compliance.

Chief strategist Steve Bannon and his populist allies, including Breitbart, have argued with McMaster over his leadership of the National Security Council. Bannon has disagreed personally with McMaster on a range of issues; from political strategy to the war in Afghanistan.

Conservative pundits have balked at McMaster having fired Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the senior director for intelligence programs at the National Security Council, who had been hired by former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

IISS’s website contains a list of groups, corporations and government entities that provide funding to the think tank, including during the period of McMaster’s work there. However, one group is conspicuously missing from the page of donors: the Ploughshares Fund, which was identified last year by the Obama White House as central in helping to market the Iran nuclear deal to the news media.

An archived version of IISS’s donors page lists Ploughshares as a donor.

Breitbart News has found that IISS is listed as a grantee for Iran issues in Ploughshares Fund’s budget report for 2016. In that report, IISS is identified as a grantee for Iran work done by Michael Elleman, IISS senior fellow for missile defense.

In a recent IISS analysis, Elleman cast doubt on charges that Iran and North Korea are working together on ballistic-missile development, claiming “there is little evidence to indicate the two regimes are engaged in deep missile-related collaboration, or pursuing joint-development programs.”

Further damning evidence shows that Joseph Cirincione, president of Ploughshares Fund, is listed as a member of IISS in his Georgetown University bio.

Additionally, in an opinion piece published in the Washington Examiner, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a warning to the GOP in July that “Democrats in Washington, D.C. are plotting to pour hundreds of millions of dollars in state and local elections across the country” in an effort to buy back power.

Abbott pointed a finger at Soros, who is helping to fund the National Democratic Redistricting Committee so that it can take away control from voters, noting that congressional re-districting will go into effect in 2021, “when booming conservative states such as Texas will gain seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

According to Abbott, “The Soros network has their sights set on re-drawing congressional districts in the Lone Star State to push their progressive agenda and turn the Texas dream into a California nightmare.”

In 2016, Soros reportedly spent nearly $11 million on a dozen local district attorney races, including one in Harris County, Texas, said Abbott, noting that most of his selected candidates won.
