Media outlet issues subpoena for Trump-Russia documents

BuzzFeed, the media outlet who published the unverified intelligence dossier about Donald Trump in January, has now filed subpoenas for more details regarding Trump and the Russians.

BuzzFeed is facing a libel suit from Alekseij Gubarev, a Russian technology official, over their decision to publish the dossier, as his name and two of his companies were mentioned in the document. BuzzFeed later blacked out his name from the document, but the original had already been circulating for several weeks.

Thursday, BuzzFeed sent demands to the CIA, the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, requesting details on the distribution of the dossier, Politico has reported.

Additionally, they have requested information from former FBI Director James Comey, former DNI James Clapper and CIA Director John Brennan.

BuzzFeed is reportedly hoping that the information they’ve requested will help further their stance that publishing the document was protected by the fair report privilege.

The dossier was written by Christopher Steele, a former British spy.
