Media pushing message for freshman senator eyeing 2020 prospects

Democratic Senator Kamala Harris, 52, of California, was elected in November 2016 and has been in office just six months, but is already being promoted by the media and Democrats as a potential presidential candidate for 2020.

Harris is also spending huge sums of money to help push her message, according to a report published Wednesday by The Washington Free Beacon.

So far this year, Harris has already paid over $400,000 to Revolution Messaging LLC, the same D.C.-based online media company that played a large role in helping Sen. Bernie Sanders get his message out during the 2016 Democratic primary.

Harris won’t need to worry about the re-election of her Senate seat until 2022, but she is already spending money on advertising.

During her campaign for the U.S. Senate, Harris used Revolution Messaging, spending $381,632 for advertising and consulting between July 7, 2016, to Election Day, and another $122,000 from Election Day through the end of the year.

But the spending hasn’t stopped. The Free Beacon reports that Harris spent a total of $407,530 for Revolution Messaging so far this year.

The message is flying across headlines that Harris will be a presidential candidate in 2020.

At a fundraising event in the Hamptons this past weekend, Harris mingled with top donors and Hillary Clinton supporters, a signal that she is “thinking much bigger” than just the Senate, according to one top bundler.

“She’s running for president. Take it to the bank. She’s absolutely going to run,” one donor said, according to The Hill.

Bill Carrick, a Democratic consultant, said of Harris, “There’s a big hunger out there for somebody new and different. People are looking for champions. … She’s in that category. There are people who might not know her real well but want to like her. What little they know, they like.”

The Hill quoted one Democratic donor as saying, “She’s no Barack Obama — she doesn’t give speeches like Obama and she doesn’t fundraise like Obama. But that’s not the way she’s looking at it. In this political climate, she’s saying, ‘If not me, then who?’”

Some have noted that for a freshman Senator who hasn’t accomplished much yet, she is certainly receiving a lot of positive “puff pieces” from the media – and the money she is spending is pushing her message out.
