Russia has developed a combat robot that can shoot guns, lift weights, drive a car, and may soon be able to make its own decisions using artificial intelligence.
The Russian cyborg is officially named FEDOR (Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research).
In alarming video footage, it can be seen firing a gun with alarming accuracy. Other footage (see below) shows it doing push-ups, lifting weights, and operating equipment from electric drills to vehicles.
Russian officials insist the robot will not be used as a killing machine to “terminate” enemies.
On Twitter, Russia’s deputy prime minister Dimitry Rogozin wrote, “Robot platform F.E.D.O.R showed shooting skills with two hands.”
“We are not creating a Terminator, but artificial intelligence that will be of a great practical significance in various fields.”
Rogozin did not say what the robot would be used for but added, “It will have huge applied value for different spheres of life. Combat robotics is a key to building intellectual machines.”
“This is applicable to areas including aviation and space,” he wrote.
The Kremlin is reportedly working to make FEDOR more agile and able to make its own decisions. They are also currently building a craft to send the robot into space.
