Megyn Kelly discussed the shooting at a Texas church during “Megyn Kelly Today” show Monday morning. The host was visibly emotional as she discussed the senseless murder of 26 people, and asked, “How do you make sense” of it?
On Sunday, a suspect police have identified as 26-year-old Devin Kelley entered a First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, located east of San Antonio. Dressed in black tactical gear, he opened fire on the congregation, killing 26 and injuring 20.
According to Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt, Kelley first walked around the church, “firing rounds,” then went in and walked “all the way up to the front, firing as he was going, and then turned around” and exited the church.
The NBC morning host described the church in which the massacre occurred, and said the shooting on Sunday is a sign that “something in our culture is off — something is just wrong,” while also asking, “How do we stop someone determined to unleash hell in a free society?”
She showed her Monday audience a taped segment featuring families and victims of the shooting. “How do you make sense of a case where a 5-year-old gets shot five times?” she asked, her voice breaking with emotion. “You know? 26 people are dead. I mean, what … does it say about us, right? What are we going to do about it?”
According to officials, Sunday’s massacre may not have been racially or religiously motivated. Instead, authorities report that Kelley sent “threatening texts to his mother-in-law who went to the church.”
“We know that he expressed anger toward his mother-in-law,” said Texas Department of Public Safety regional director Freeman Martin at a press conference Monday morning. “There was a domestic situation going on within the family and the in-laws,” he said.
The victims of Sunday’s shooting ranged in age from 18 months to 77 years.
