Appearing in Berlin at a public debate Thursday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Barack Obama praised Merkel for her “outstanding work” before making defensive comments regarding his own tenure as POTUS and emphasizing their shared values of liberal democracy.
“We have to push back against those trends that would violate human rights or suppress democracy or restrict individual freedoms,” Obama told the crowd of thousands as he launched into a diatribe against President Trump’s nationalistic policies, stating, “We can’t isolate ourselves. We can’t hide behind a wall.”
Up for reelection in September, Merkel was criticized by her political opponents who claim that the show with Obama was nothing more than a publicity stunt designed to gain votes as she seeks to win a fourth term.
Merkel is expected to meet with fellow NATO leaders, including President Trump, later on Thursday in Brussels.
