When Tiffany Thrasher, 33, of Schaumburg, Illinois, did not show up to sing at Easter mass Sunday morning, members of her church got worried and called police.
Officers went to her first-floor apartment and found her brutally murdered. Thrasher had been sexually assaulted and strangled.
Wednesday, police arrested her killer, Bulmaro Mejia-Maya, 29, a construction worker and a citizen of Mexico who lived in the apartment building directly opposite of Thrasher’s, with their balcony’s facing each other. Maya had entered Thrasher’s apartment through an unlocked window, killed her, then fled to Florida, where he had previously lived.
Thrasher had gone out to dinner the night before, and texted a friend around 8:00 pm after returning home, so police know she was murdered sometime between 8pm Saturday night and 11:00 am Sunday morning, when they found her.
Based on evidence and interviews, police soon zeroed in on Mejia-Maya and learned he may have fled to Florida. He was tracked down and arrested in Jacksonville by U.S. marshals Wednesday night, where he allegedly “made incriminating statements” after his arrest, admitting to the crime.
The Daily Caller has reported that Mejia-Maya already has a long criminal history. A Jacksonville police report confirms that he is a citizen of Mexico, and that he has a green card.
In May 2012, he was arrested for stabbing a man, but instead of pleading guilty to felony charges and losing his green card, he opted to plead guilty to reduced charges and served 117 days in prison.
Mejia-Maya also had an active warrant out for his arrest, due to failure to appear in court in Utah over cocaine charges in May 2016.
Thrasher’s sister, Misty King, said, “She found her one true love in Jesus, she loved her church, her family, her canine children and her Chicago Cubs.”
Her family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
