The meeting between President Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, which as scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 31, is now officially cancelled.

Mexican President Nieto announced via Twitter Thursday morning, “This morning we have informed the White House that I will not attend the meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with the @POTUS.”

He added, “Mexico reiterates its willingness to work with the United States to achieve agreements in favor of both nations.”

About 3 hours prior to the Mexican President’s cancellation, President Trump stated on Twitter, “The U.S. has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico. It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers of jobs and companies lost. If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.”

Speaking at the GOP Retreat in Philadelphia Thursday, Trump said, “The President of Mexico and myself have agreed to cancel our planned meeting schedule for next week.  Unless Mexico is going to treat the United States fairly and with respect, such a meeting would be fruitless, and I want to go a different route.”

Wednesday evening, President Nieto issued a video statement in response to President Trump’s signing the executive order to move forward on the border wall, and called for the Mexican immigrants’ rights to be protected in the U.S.

He declared that “I have ordered the Foreign Ministry re-enforce measures of protection for our nationals (inside the U.S.)” and said the 50 Mexican consultants within the U.S. “will become authentic places of defense for the rights of the migrants.”

He added, “The Mexican government will offer them the legal counsel which will guarantee them the protection they need,” and he called on legislators and civil organizations to support the Mexican immigrants in the U.S. to protect their “rights.”
He emphasized again that Mexico will not pay for Trump’s wall.

Wednesday, President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted that, “Mexico offers and demands respect, as the fully sovereign nation that we are.

No recognition was given regarding the rights of the United States as a sovereign nation.
