The Mexican consul in Chicago is reporting a major influx of Mexican immigrants into the city, fueled by the Chicago Mayor’s vow not to comply with new administration mandates on illegal immigration.
The Mexican consuls are also encouraging Mexicans living in the United States to file and begin the process of citizenship in an effort to preclude them from deportation.
A Mexican publication, El Financiero, stated that Carlos Garcia de Alba of the Mexican consulate in Los Angeles urged all Mexicans living in the United States with residency papers, to seek official citizenship of the country. He said this move can be used “as a tool of empowerment” against a deportation process that may be implemented by the new administration.
According to Garcia de Alba, there are about 2.7 million Mexicans living in America with the ability to begin the citizenship process if they take the time out to file the necessary paperwork at consulates.
Carlos Martin Jimenez, Chicago’s Mexican Consul, was speaking at a meeting of a group Mexican ambassadors and consuls in Mexico City and said that “Mexicans in Indiana and Wisconsin are coming to the Chicago consulate due to it being a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.”
Chicago, a sanctuary city, has seen a rise in the Mexican immigrants because of the city’s sanctuary status.
Back in December, Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel said, “To all those who are, after Tuesday’s election, very nervous and filled with anxiety as we’ve spoken to, you are safe in Chicago, you are secure in Chicago and you are supported in Chicago.”
According to El Financiero, the Chicago Mayor has already begun setting up a special office called New Citizens and has supplied a free phone for those without documentation.
Trump has vowed to punish sanctuary cities and Republicans have introduced a bill to block funding to jurisdictions that don’t comply with federal immigration detainers or otherwise protect illegal immigrants.
President-elect Trump said he would deport the estimated 11 million or so illegal immigrants in the U.S., as well as build a wall to keep them out.
