On Monday, Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Videgaray hinted at the country’s intentions to help illegal immigrants in the United States in their fight to remain north of the border.

“We are going to focus the money on one fundamental objective,” Videgaray said.  “Which is the defense of the rights of Mexicans. This means legal advice, informational campaigns, the hiring of lawyers where it is necessary.”

In an effort to “promote respect for Mexican rights,” Videgaray insisted that the impending $50 million aid to its citizens facing potential deportation “isn’t about obstructing the enforcement of the law in the United States, or much less opposing law enforcement.”

Mexico will reportedly be spreading the $50 million in aid to Mexican consulates throughout the United States, to help Mexicans who are in the U.S. illegally and need help fighting deportation orders.

Videgaray also acknowledged the North American Free Trade Agreement is in need of some tweaking. “It will be necessary to make some changes,” Videgaray said.

Expanding on trade, Mexico’s highest ranking diplomat also touched upon his country’s intentions to diversify its trade partners, as 80% of its commerce is exchanged between the United States.
