Middle East Green Card Holders Banned From Return To U.S.

President Donald Trump’s executive order on “extreme vetting” of migrants from predominately Muslim countries also applies to migrants with American green cards.

This revelation came from the Department of Homeland Security as they provided guidance Saturday morning that the order “will bar green card holders.”

A green card serves as proof of a person’s permanent legal residence in the United States. Including green card holders in the ban will undoubtedly cause blowback, as they have a clear legal immigration status.

During the ban, companies like Google are advising employees who are green card holders not to travel outside of the United States.

According to ProPublica, Trump’s executive order may block as many as hundreds of thousands of legal aliens from returning to the United States. In the last ten years, over 500,000 green cards have been issued to migrants from the seven banned countries, meaning if these migrants are to temporarily travel outside of the United States, they may not be able to return.

President Trump made “extreme vetting” of migrants to the United States a cornerstone of the 2016 campaign. Throughout the Republican primary, Trump pledged to more tightly examine migrants seeking asylum and travel to the United States.

Just seven days into his administration, Trump has followed through on the pledge. Trump signed the executive order on Friday at the Pentagon, flanked by Vice President Pence and Secretary of Defense General James Mattis.

The order indefinitely bans Syrian refugees and temporarily bans travel from six other Muslim countries.

Reuters reported: “New restrictions on immigrants and refugees in an executive order signed by President Donald Trump will mean legal permanent residents who have passports from the seven countries have to be cleared back into the United States on a case-by-case basis, an official told reporters in a briefing.”
