Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo has officially been confirmed by the Senate to head the Central Intelligence Agency by a 66-32 vote Monday evening.
President Donald Trump’s choice to lead the coveted agency was opposed by 30 Democrats, including Sen. Bernie Sanders due to his “controversial stances” on surveillance, torture and Russia’s alleged hacking and involvement in the 2016 presidential election campaign.
One Republican, Sen. Rand Paul, also opposed Pomepo as the selected choice to direct the CIA. Paul alleges that Pompeo’s “desire for security will trump his defense of liberty.”
Following his confirmation, Pompeo was officially sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence.
