Today is August 9 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch. Below are my opinions on the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room, in my opinion. 1-Portland riot declared as fire burns in police union offices
PORTLAND, Ore. — A fire inside a police union building led authorities in Portland, Oregon, to declare a riot and force protesters away from the offices as violent demonstrations continue in the city that had hoped for calm after federal agents withdrew more than a week ago.

A group of demonstrators broke into the Portland Police Association building, set the fire and were adding to it when officers made the riot declaration late Saturday, police tweeted. Video shot by a journalist shows smoke and flames arising from inside the building.

Several hundred people had gathered outside the offices, which are located about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of the federal courthouse that had been the target of nightly violence earlier this summer. The Portland Police Association is a labor union that represents members of the Portland Police Bureau.

DML: I would be SHOCKED, and I mean SHOCKED, if the people of Portland vote for another Democrat to run the city and state. If they do, then you know how absolutely far gone the residents of that state have gotten.  But my heart tells me the fringe element we see committing these fires and causing the lock downs are not representative of the state and city.  Maybe I’ve lost my ability to see the future, but my gut tells me there will be a wave of red in the years to come.

2-5,000,000 cases
The United States neared another grim milestone Sunday, approaching 5 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus — as deaths attributed to the virus topped 162,000.

Johns Hopkins University pegged the U.S. total at 4,998,105 as of Sunday morning, while The New York Times claimed its own database showed the U.S. already surpassing the 5 million mark. The U.S. continues to have the highest number of cases in the world, with Brazil and India trailing in second and third place, The New York Times reported.

Brazil has now joined the U.S. with more than 100,000 coronavirus deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

On Saturday, President Trump signed four executive orders that included a $400-a-week supplemental.

DML: Yesterday, I was on the phone with a business associate, he is in his late 20s.  He was on line waiting for his COVID test.  He has tested positive on the weekend of July 4 after attending a party with a person who was sick with the virus but blew off the symptoms to have fun instead, putting everyone else at risk.  “Half the party got sick,” my friend told me.  But when I asked about how the sickness was, he said he had a scratchy throat, headache, body aches, and a loss of taste for a week.  But then he was back to normal.  The same for his other friends.  He ended up testing negative while we were on the phone.  Either way, people get sick and then people get better.  That’s the key to this story.  He didn’t die, he will be fine, and the country should be wide open.

3-Trump signs executive order
President Donald Trump signed an executive order for a payroll tax holiday at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey, on Saturday. “The very important thing is that people want it, and the people need it, actually,” Trump said, noting that Republicans and Democrats in Congress could not reach a deal.

The president said that the payroll tax holiday would apply to Americans earning less than $100,000 a year. “If I am victorious on November 3, I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax,” he said.

Trump added that he might even “terminate” the tax or make permanent changes. A group of supporters joined the president at his press conference announcing the news and cheered as the president signed the orders.

The president also said he would provide a federal unemployment enhancement of $400 per week but that states would pay for 25 percent of the cost. He also signed an extension of the moratorium on evictions and deferred student loan payments.

“The Democrats have obstructed people from getting desperately needed help,” Trump said. The president said he would find ways to use existing funds already passed by Congress for coronavirus relief to help Americans fight the virus and the economic struggles from the lockdowns. “We have the money to do a lot of things, money that was unspent, and we would do a lot of things with the money that was unspent,” he said.

DML: I hate the free money routine, my choice is to open the country and let people get back to work as normal would have it.  But assuming Trump’s hands are tied from state to state, this action via executive order is a smart play amid the election season.  It shows the president understands the strife and wants to heal the nation despite the hurdles placed in front of him by Democrats.  Strong move.  Meanwhile, sleepy Joe Biden slammed the move as a hit on social security.  Someone get the man oxygen, he is losing his mind completely.

4-Troop reduction in Afghanistan

Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in an interview broadcast late Saturday that no more than 5,000 U.S. troops would remain in Afghanistan by the end of November, as the Trump administration looks to move forward with a reduction of forces in the region.

“We’re going down to a number less than 5,000 by the end of November. We need to brief Congress [about] what that looks like,” Esper said on Fox News’s “Justice with Judge Jeanine.”

Esper cautioned that the troop reduction would be “conditions-based” and carried out as long as the Pentagon felt it could proceed with missions in the region with fewer troops.

DML: Amen!

5-Federal Reserve official calls for a nationwide economic shutdown for up to six weeks
Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, called for a nationwide economic shutdown for up to six weeks to get the coronavirus pandemic under control on Friday, warning that the rest of 2020 could be much worse than what America has experienced so far.

“The next six months could make what we have experienced so far seem like just a warm-up to a greater catastrophe. With many schools and colleges starting, stores and businesses reopening, and the beginning of the indoor heating season, new case numbers will grow quickly,” Kashkari wrote in a New York Times op-ed with Dr. Michael T. Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

Kashkari echoed comments he made a week ago on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” when he argued that “if we were to lock down hard for a month or six weeks, we could get the case count down so that our testing and our contact tracing was actually enough to control” the spread of coronavirus.

DML: Crazy ass. We are not shutting down ever again!

DML PARTYING WORDS
: Although I would love to say I am correct about never shutting down again, I do not hold that sort of power (not yet). Meaning, we remain at the whim of President Trump and the governors of each state. Me, I would have NEVER allowed a shutdown, nor would I have given the lab rat chasing Dr Fauci on stage at ever presser. There would be no masks, no social distancing, no closing of schools and business. Instead, we would focus on keeping the vulnerable in safe harbors and focus on building the immune system. I am not president, so until then all I can do is help you build your immune system, get the sleep you need, curb the anxiety, diminish the pain, and add balance to your being. 1. The people of Portland are stupid, hell the whole state is full of stupid people, they will continue to vote for demorats because of their false promises, and they will blame trump as always…..
We need to open the country up fully not shut it down. Yes some will get sick and some will die, its the same as cancer ,the flue, and a host of other diseases….

  2. Idiots like your friend are why the virus keeps spreading. Did he quarantine after testing positive? Did he stay in quarantine until after his symptoms resolved? Did you know the highest virus counts you shed are 2-3 days BEFORE you have symptoms? That one party is causing a lot of sickness to the parents and grandparents, too. Long term effects include blood clots, heart damage, kidney damage, etc. Was that party worth it? Sources: JAMA, John Hopkins and many peer reviewed medical studies.

  3. Regarding Portland and democrats…they probably won’t vote for a Republican because running against the current democratic mayor is…another democrat. The only way Portland will see a Republican mayor in the next election is if a candidate launches a successful write-in campaign…in the next 3 months. Good luck with that, Portland.

  4. I wish I had enough money to sign up but at this point I’m 71 years old and compromised immune system’s lost all of her 401(k) and savings because of my health years ago I don’t have a supplement I get Social Security which I have $144 left after paying rent! I can’t pay my credit card yes cards they are deferring payments for me praise the Lord! As you know the problem is when they stop doing that I won’t have the money miracle has to happen here! Why I mentioned all this to you was because I know you’re not in favor of the checks going to people! I just wanted to explain one person‘s burden and that $1200 that was a given out before really help me! I don’t even own my own car it’s my daughters families car I don’t have a car insurance I’m on their insurance. Sorry for the complaining but I’m not I’m just wanted to explain to you especially because you do not like the checks going to people! I love your site I love listening to you talk thank you very much and I will say I bought your CBD a lot and put it on my credit card haven’t got corona yet! God is good God bless you all!

  5. I am heartbroken…my daughter in Portland said that the same democrat idiots were running again, so she and my son-in-law threw their ballots away rather than vote for them. I asked her if any Republicans were running and she said yes. Then why didn’t you vote for them, I said. We didn’t want to vote for the devil…Their mayor is supporting BLM burning down the town, but a vote for someone new is not even an option???? I don’t even know what to say…
