Mother arrested for cooking child on barbecue

Police arrested a 27-year-old mother  Sunday evening, after responding to calls from neighbors who said they heard a child screaming and reported seeing smoke coming from underneath a garage door.

In unimaginable horror took place in Belgium, where police arrived to find the woman cooking the body of her own 2-year-old daughter on a charcoal grill, local media HLN reported.

The woman reportedly indicated that she wanted to commit suicide, telling police, “We had to both burn, only so we get together in heaven.”

The child’s remains were almost completely burned, and police are trying to determine whether the woman killed her daughter first and then burned her, or if she was burned alive. Autopsy results had not yet been made public at the time of the news report.

The incident happened in the town of Zemst, just north of Brussels. The woman, who is reported to be of African descent, is in the process of a divorce and is said to have been depressed. The woman’s mother shares a home with her but was said to be away at the time of the incident.

Local official Hans Hellebuyck stated the fact that the woman’s thinking only the soul of someone who is cremated can go to heaven points to psychiatric problems.

“It’s hard to estimate what happens to a mother who kills and burns her child. For this, we should know the exact circumstances. If the woman made such remarks and truly meant them, it is possible that she is mentally ill. I am not saying it is like that, but it is something which has to be taken into account,” Hellebuyck said.

The mother has been arrested for murder and is being held in a hospital. Due to her mental condition, authorities were not yet able to interview her.
