The mother of Heather Heyer, the woman killed when a white supremacist rammed his car through a crowd of people protesting a nationalist rally in Charlottesville on Saturday, has said she will not speak to President Trump following his controversial press conference on Tuesday.
Susan Bro initially offered kind words to the president, thanking him for his remarks Monday recognizing her daughter and condemning neo-nazis and white supremacists. But Trump essentially reversed his sentiment Tuesday, condemning the “alt-right” but also laying blame on the “alt-left.” Following a stressful day setting up her daughter’s funeral, as well as a foundation in her name, Trump’s comments were rejected by Bro.
“I saw an actual clip of him at a press conference equating the protesters like Ms. Heyer with the KKK and the white supremacists,” Ms. Bro said. “You can’t wash this one away by shaking my hand and saying ‘I’m sorry,’” she added. “I’m not forgiving for that.”
In a statement released Monday, Bro thanked Trump for “words of comfort and for denouncing those who promote violence and hatred” that day.
“I thought that the statement put out, the mother’s statement, I thought was a beautiful statement,” Trump said. “I tell you, it was something that I really appreciated. I thought it was terrific.”
But Trump’s kind words on Wednesday, the day of Heyer’s funeral, fell on deaf ears.
“Memorial service today for beautiful and incredible Heather Heyer, a truly special young woman,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday. “She will be long remembered by all!”
A White House spokeswoman, Lindsay Walters, had said Trump was looking for a “convenient time” to speak with Bro. It appears he will no longer get that opportunity.
Toward the end of her interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Bro left the president one damning piece of advice: “Think before you speak.”
