A mother of eight has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and five years probation after five of her kids were found malnourished and in dire need of medical care.

In March of 2015 Haydee Santana was arrested when her 5-year-old daughter told the school about abuse received at home.

According to NJ.com, when police entered Santana’s home they discovered five of her children living in filth. There was no electricity or gas and Santana’s 3-year-old twins were locked in a bathroom.

Assistant Prosecutor Michael Mennuti said, “She has eight children, without any interest or skills in caring for them.”

He went on to say that one of the infant children had a severe, untreated diaper rash that required medical care.

This is not Santana’s first time being in trouble for lacking to care for her children. She was reportedly arrested after giving birth to twins – her sixth and seventh children.

Her boyfriend at the time, Jonathan Rivas was also arrested for child endangerment.

After her arrest, the children were taken by the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

During her recent sentencing, Mennuti told the court that the children have been removed from Santana on numerous occasions, but each time, she had received assistance and the children were given back to her.

“She had ample opportunities to learn and become aware,” Mennuti said.

However, Santana’s attorney, Kathleen Redpath-Perez, felt that her issues are because of her lack of education.

Santana’s boyfriend, who spoke at the sentencing, said, “She can move forward and I will help her to the end.”

The judge determined that Santana was at risk of committing additional offenses. He then gave out the probation and jail sentences, NJ.com reported.
