Mother Wants Transgender 5-Year-Old To Use Girls Bathroom

A Texas mother who claims her child has “identified as a girl” since the age of 3 is now fighting for the child to use the girls’ restroom when kindergarten starts this fall.

The child, Kai Shappley, of Pearland, Texas is now five years old, and was born a male, named “Joseph Paul.”

The mother, Kim Shappley, claims “Kai” began “transitioning to life as a female” at age 3, when he decided he wanted to wear a bow in his hair.

Kim Shappley took it all the way to the local school board Tuesday night, fighting for her “transgender child” to use the restroom that he identifies with.  The Pearland School District says “Kai” must use the boys’ bathroom, because he is still legally a boy, KPRC Houston News reported.

“Please understand I’m not fighting about bathrooms, I’m fighting about her life, I’m fighting about her well-being, I’m fighting for her happiness, I’m fighting for her future,” Shappley said.

“Every person that has a degree who has studied this says that it is wrong to tell my child for anyone to tell my child that she cannot use the facility that aligns with the gender she identifies with,” she told the school board.

KPRC reports that the mother said “putting her daughter in the public eye is not something she’s doing lightly, but she’s doing it to promote understanding and change.”

A statement released by the district read, “Pearland ISD’s stance on transgender students remains children whose parents declare them transgender must go to the bathroom for the sex indicated on their birth certificate. Such students have also been allowed to use a private bathroom (such as in the nurse’s station) if they are so inclined. All Pearland ISD kindergarten classrooms have a private, gender-neutral bathroom within the classroom for student use.”
