Marjorie Weer found herself caught in the middle of a fake news story involving her son Monty, who is wheelchair-bound from spina bifida, and President Trump, who was wrongly accused of snubbing the boy moments after giving a press conference about health care reform on July 24.
In the final hours leading up to the Senate’s vote on bills to repeal and replace Obamacare, Trump delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the hardships that American families, such as the Weer’s and others families in attendance at the event, face with Obamacare.
“Washington Democrats promised families like the Weers that if they liked their doctor they could keep their doctor, but now there is only one insurer left in the state exchange,” Trump said, motioning toward Weer’s 3-year-old son Monty, seated in a wheelchair beside his mother. “More Obamacare lies,” Trump said.
After his speech concluded, Trump shook hands with the families, including Weer and her husband, as he made his way toward the door, but liberal news outlets fixated on a 25-second clip that had been circulated and taken out of context.
The carefully edited clip showed Monty appearing to offer his hand up to Trump as he walked by the little boy. However, the full unedited video proves that the child was the first person Trump spoke to when he entered the room, leaning down to greet him directly.
As usual, the anti-Trump mainstream media hyper-focused on the misleading clip and claimed Trump blatantly ignored the boy’s request for a handshake.
The video quickly went viral, thrusting Weer’s family into the national spotlight.
It also attracted the attention of J.K Rowling, author of the popular “Harry Potter” book series, who went on a demeaning Twitter tirade, claiming that Trump pretended not to see the disabled boy.
“Trump imitated a disabled reporter. Now he pretends not to see a child in a wheelchair, as though frightened he might catch his condition.”
“This monster of narcissism values only himself and his pale reflections. The disabled, minorities, transgender people, the poor, women (unless related to him by ties of blood, and therefore his creations) are treated with contempt because they do not resemble Trump,” she continued.
“How stunning and how horrible, that Trump cannot bring himself to shake the hand of a small boy who only wanted to touch the President,” the Harry Potter author continued.
Monty’s mother defended Trump, saying that Rowling’s interpretation of the encounter was “over-the-top wrong,” reports the Washington Examiner.
“I thought it had to be from the Onion or something. … We laughed. We thought it was funny because it was so not true, so not near the realm of truth, it had to be made up,” the mother recalled.
Weer also told reporters that her son was not trying to shake the president’s hand, which many had wrongly assumed. More accurately, he was showing Trump a patch given to him by a Secret Service agent earlier that day.
In an attempt to get the message back to Rowling and diffuse the escalating situation, she posted her explanation of what actually occurred on Facebook, which Weer later deactivated.
It appears her efforts worked because Rowling quickly deleted her tweets Monday and apologized for her remarks, saying if “that caused any distress to that boy or his family, I apologize unreservedly.”
As far as how Weer and her family are dealing with being at the center of a fake news story, she said: “Nobody bothered to reach out, so my family got dragged into all of this, and my son had so much exposure than I ever would’ve wanted. I appreciate her apology, and I hope this has calmed down, but like my husband said, we don’t know if there are any more consequences to come. There are articles and information about my son that’s out there that I wouldn’t have wanted.
“Apology accepted, but it doesn’t take away the consequences.”
Below is the UNEDITED VIDEO which shows President Trump walking up to Monty before he spoke with anyone else. Morever, he greeted each child before he began hsi speech.
The following is the EDITED version which makes it appear that Trump ignored the child.
