When Queen Elizabeth II showed up for her speech to Parliament on Wednesday sporting a blue hat that looked suspiciously like the European Union’s same-colored flag, social media users went positively batty trying to decipher her meaning.
The royal blue hat in question featured five flowers with yellow centers on its front that had Twitter users making all sorts of Brexit-related comments while Buckingham Palace remains mum.
“How FAB. Queen wears EU flag as Hat,” tweeted Liz Sewell. Another user, Oli Mould stated, “the Queen trolls the #brexit brigade by wearing an EU hat. The Queen is WOKE.

Guy Verhofstadt, European Parliament member and leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group seemed impressed when he tweeted, “Clearly the EU still inspires some in the UK” in response to the Queen’s choice of headwear.

In an unprecedented and polarizing move, a majority of Britons voted last year to leave the EU. Speaking on Wednesday, Queen Elizabeth laid out a policy agenda that was mostly focused on her country’s “divorce” with the European Union, known as Brexit.
Her speeches are usually very extravagant, traditional events cloaked in velvet robes and topped with a glittering crown, but this speech lacked pomp. And the blue hat was an interesting choice, given the subject matter.
