MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow released a copy of a portion of President Trump’s 2005 tax return on Tuesday night. Maddow received the return from a journalist who claims he received it mysteriously in his mailbox.
The return includes only the first two pages, and it shows that the president earned more than $150 million in 2005, and he paid more than $30 million in taxes. The journalist, David Johnston, claims the tax return could have been leaked to him by President Trump himself.
The White House put out the following statement slamming the release of the return:
“Before being elected President, Mr. Trump was one of the most successful businessmen in the world with a responsibility to his company, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required. That being said, Mr. Trump paid $38 million dollars even after taking into account large scale depreciation for construction, on an income of more than $150 million dollars, as well as paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes and this illegally published return proves just that. Despite this substantial income figure and tax paid, it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns. The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans.”
The return, which is missing many pages, doesn’t show where Trump received his income. The return can be viewed at DCReport.org
Maddow pointed out that more than 1 million people have signed a petition on the White House web site has called on Trump to release his tax returns.
Maddow said the 2005 return also included $103 million in deductions.
