Mueller hires another Dem donor to special counsel team

With the addition of attorney Greg Andres this week, eight confirmed Democratic donors are now working for special counsel Robert Mueller’s legal team.

Previously working for New York attorney Davis Polk, conservatives’ main concern with the 50-year-old Andres isn’t his qualifications but his proximity to the Democratic party. A search of federal election records shows that Andres has donated at least a total of $3700 to federal Democratic candidates, including $2700 to New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in March 2017. His wife, Ronnie Abrams, was appointed as a federal judge by Obama in 2011.

In total, the eight Democratic donors working for Mueller have donated $60,700 to Democratic campaigns. President Trump has voiced concerns about the allegiances of a supposedly neutral investigative team.

Trump told Fox News in June, “I can say that the people that have been hired are all Hillary Clinton supporters. Some of them worked for Hillary Clinton. I mean the whole thing is ridiculous, if you want to know the truth, from that standpoint.”

Mueller is a registered Republican, however, and has the blessing of GOP leadership in Congress. House Speaker Paul Ryan has avidly defended Mueller in recent weeks, saying “I don’t think many people are saying Bob Mueller is a biased partisan. He’s really, sort of, anything but.”

But the Democratic donor hirings coupled with a ramping up of the scope of the investigation have Trump officials uneasy. According to Reuters, the fact Mueller continues to add people to his team at all signals the investigation is in for the long haul.

Robert Ray, who succeeded Kenneth Starr as independent counsel for the Whitewater investigation during the Clinton administration, said the expansion of the team means the probe isn’t going to end any time soon.

“It’s an indication that the investigation is going to extend well into 2018,” said Ray. “Whether it extends beyond 2018 is an open question.”
