Newt Gingrich is questioning the fairness of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

During an appearance on “The Laura Ingraham Show” Monday, Ingraham questioned the friendship between Mueller and Comey. Gingrich replied that he thinks it’s “impossible” for Mueller to conduct a fair investigation.

“This will be a witchhunt,” the former House Speaker said, going on to say that historically, Comey has been revealed as a “bad person.”

Ingraham remarked that while Mueller isn’t Comey, the two are “pals.”

“Muellers first three hires are all people that donated to the Democratic party,” Gingrich replied.

Earlier Monday morning, Gingrich sparked a media frenzy with the same idea in a tweet challenging the fairness of the investigation. He wrote: “Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair. Look who he is hiring.check fec [sic] reports. Time to rethink.”

According to Lifezette, Gingrich isn’t wrong. They write:

Four top lawyers hired by Mueller have contributed tens of thousands of dollars over the years to the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates, including former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump’s 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton.

One of the hires, Jeannie Rhee, also worked as a lawyer for the Clinton Foundation and helped persuade a federal judge to block a conservative activist’s attempts to force Bill and Hillary Clinton to answer questions under oath about operations of the family-run charity.

According to campaign-finance reports, Rhee made contributions of $2,700 in 2015 and 2016 to support the Clinton campaign, the maximum donation amount allowed. She also donated over $2K to Obama, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Services Corp. and multiple Democratic senators.

Another Mueller hire is James Quarles, a lawyer that was part of the Watergate investigation. He has also been a long-time supporter of Democratic politicians, making contributions of $1,300 to Obama in 2007 and $2,300 in 2008.  Last year, he gave Hillary Clinton the same $2,700 contribution Rhee gave. Quarles has supported many other Democratic candidates and has given money to both former and current Democratic senators, as well as the DNC Services Corp. The GOP has also received financial assistance from Quarels, who reportedly gave money to both former-Sen. George Allen (R-VA) and current Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT).

A third Mueller hire with financial ties to Democrats is Andrew Weissmann. The former Justice Department lawyer gave the Obama campaign $2,300 in 2008 and made a $2,000 contribution to the DNC Services Corp. in 2006.

The fourth Mueller hired lawyer to finance the Democrats is Michael Dreeben, who was hired to assist part-time with the investigation. Dreeben donated $1,000 to Clinton 2006, and in both 2007 and 2008, he contributed $250 to Obama.

Dreeben’s Democratic party affiliation isn’t the only troubling aspect of his inclusion on the Russian investigation team. As reported Sunday, over the last 20 years, Dreeben has specialized in criminal matters. His presence, according to political commentator Paul Rosenzweig, suggests Muellers efforts are serious.

Despite the truth of Gingrich’s claims about Democratic party contributions by multiple persons associated with the Russia investigation, Media pundits criticized the comments. Some noted that Gingrich had previously tweeted Mueller was a “superb choice to be special counsel” and that Mueller’s reputation was “impeccable for honesty and integrity.”

In response, Gingrich laid out the reasons he changed his mind in three points, tweeting: “Fair question, why I changed my mind on mueller. 1. Comey admitted leaking to set up special counsel 2. Comey-Mueller close 3. Mueller hiring partisans.”
